portrait of Bonnie Sanger
Hans Bruhner

Hans Bruhner was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. He is self-taught as a photographer and was first published in photography magazines in Sweden in the early sixties. He has traveled in Europe and also in Central and South America while working in Colombia.

He has exhibited in San Francisco and the Bay Area and also locally in both solo and group shows. Influenced by painters, sculptors and folk artists, his Cibachrome images often have a painterly quality.

Besides conventionally framed images, Hans creates photo assemblages where the frames, often made of found objects and discards, become part of the image. The frames can set off the photo; they can separate the viewer; or draw you in.

"I look for simple lines, few colors, a certain rhythm, character and content. I like dark, slightly mysterious areas in my pictures, images that remind us that photos are memories preserved."

EVOLUTION RESOLUTION

'PETER'S STUDIO' This is a detail of Peter Allegaert's studio in Elk.
An extremely small studio, inhabited by many mice & other critters, all of them Peter's friends.
The portrait in the middle is a tintype of an unknown man.

TROUBLED WATERS

'SAN VICENTE, BAJA CALIFORNIA' A ordinary scene from an ordinary Mexican village.
However, the colors are great and casually applied. The new owner of this little store covered up
the old name with a great red patch. A traveling circus came to town later that day.

AMERICAN SIDESHOW

‘WASHINGTON SQUARE, SF’
A restaurant with fabulous drapes that unfortunately looks a little bit like a mortuary.
Might be bad for business.

CRUCIFORM

‘THE FRENCH FIELD MARSHALL’
Wood pattern, also called a mould, with cloth and a Mexican mask.
Reminds me of Napoleon.

FLOWERS 2

SANTA FE DE ANTIOQUIA’ Semana Santa in Colombia.
The woman turned her head at the exact right moment.
The many altar boys in the background are obscured by incense.

‘CROSS AND LADDER’
This image shows the interior of a small mexican village church.
Textile, photo & paint on wood.

cross

‘CROSS WITH MASK’
Wooden assemblage with an African mask plus leather strap.
These small masks are called passport masks.

Hans Bruhner - I like wood and I like boxes. I collect strange and some not so strange stuff. Odd is good. I'm also a photographer. You put that together and you get basically more stuff, most of it happening around a photograph, often from Latin America.
