MENDOCINO STORIES EVENTS
In performance at the Mendocino Hotel June 23, 2007
THE WHALES AND I
The Mendocino Stories and Music Series is proud to present the “Uniquely Mendocino” music of "The Whales and I" featuring Antonia Lamb, John Chamberlin & Lenny Laks on Saturday, June 23rd for an evening of rhythm, wit and boogie. This not-to-be-missed event starts at 7:30 PM in the Garden Room of the Mendocino Hotel. There will be a sliding-scale door charge and a free CD raffle.
Local luminaries Lamb, Chamberlin and Laks (with some special guests) will play their special brand of music featuring many songs written locally about local events & people. This is also a night celebrating Antonia Lamb©ˆs recovery from a year-long life-threatening illness. She©ˆs back!
Antonia Lamb was called "a sub-cultural icon" in a review of her second album. She is a songwriter, musician, author, astrologer, psychic and radio person who moved to Mendocino from Hollywood in 1971. Her first album is in the Mendocino County Museum because it was the first record made in Mendocino entirely by Mendocino musicians. Her third CD, "Gamma," was released last summer. She and the Whales are now completing her fourth album of original music.
Known for her humor, insight, powerful stage presence & unique banjo style, Antonia has performed all over the U.S., the U.K, Europe, and Australia. Her songs are emotional, political, funny, compassionate, silly.
She began her career as a songwriter the night John F. Kennedy was shot, co-writing "He Was a Friend of Mine" with her friend Roger McGuinn, founder of the Byrds. Her songs have themed films and a Peabody-award winning TV special: they have been recorded & played by groups & artists including The Byrds, Judy Mayhan, Kate Wolf, Biff Rose, Liesl's Wet Dress, Roy Michaels, Joe Richards, Gibson & Camp, and Darryl Cherney. She©ˆs shared the stage with Mimi Farina, John Hartford, Maria Muldaur, John Lee Hooker, Parsons Green, the Persuasions, etc.
She says she's been fortunate to make music with a talented, diverse group of cohorts, most often John Chamberlin and Lenny Laks. "The alchemy between us has moved me into wonderful musical realms..."
John Chamberlin has been playing & recording music locally since 1970, when he emigrated from New York and became part of the proto-psychedelic funk band Cat Mother. He was a founding member of the Mark Levine Revue, Horse Badorties, and Gonzo. He and Lenny Laks have been the Whales for some time now. He mostly plays guitar. An eclectic & elegant musician, he's also a commercial artist with a vast catalog of album covers, illustrations, signs, posters, cartoons and logos.
Lenny Laks is a jazz & soul-based singer, songwriter, guitar & bass player from Brooklyn. He came to Mendocino in 1972 after recording two albums as a founding member of the legendary, psychedelic Hamilton Face band and working with modern composer Luciano Berio. Lenny brings a richly soulful bottom line to any music he makes, as he pursues the mystery of the groove. He©ˆs been an essential part of many local groups & bands including his own, the Whales. He recently recorded his first CD of original songs, "Ring Around the Sun" and is about to record another.
Don't miss this night of delicious music with "The Whales & I" at the Garden Room of the Mendocino Hotel on Saturday, June 23rd. The doors open at 7, show starts at 7:30, and the free CD raffle happens at 9 pm.
