John Birchard Though I enjoy all kinds of photography, I still consider landscape images to be my art form. Since I live by the dramatic North Pacific, many of my images are seascapes. Unlike a painter, the landscape photographer can't "cheat" by moving picture elements around to form a more pleasing composition. The photographer has to be in the right place at the right time, with the right equipment and the knowledge and experience to capture an interesting image.

John Birchard - Photography Editor - I have written and photographed how-to books, produced videos, and authored numerous magazine articles. I have also worked for commercial clients such as Fetzer Vinyards, Sothebys International Real Estate, The Associated Press, The SF Chronicle, Wine Enthusiast, and many more.

The photographer has to be in the right place at the right time, with the right equipment and the knowledge and experience to capture an interesting image.
And that's just the easy part. Making a beautiful print even from a well photographed image still takes a thorough understanding of how to manipulate the captured image and apply it to paper. Digital printing gives us greater control over the final outcome of our image, but there is no substitute for experience when it comes to planning, capturing, and printing an image.
I am currently a partner in the Mendocino Photographer Guild and Gallery in the Company Store on Main Street in Fort Bragg, and have been showing my work at the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino for many years.
